Tiwa secara tradisional digunakan untuk mengiringi tarian dan upacara sebelum pelayaran laut dilakukan, atau selama baut-baut, lagu-lagu epik yang dinyanyikan dalam prosesi perahu. Selama prosesi ini para tamu raja disambut dan tifa dimainkan di atas panggung di depan perahu (Kartomi, 1998: 820). Terkadang mereka digunakan selama eksorsisme hantu. Saat bermain, para gadis menabuh genderang dan bernyanyi (Kunst, 1945: 222). Gendang Tiwa dimainkan di seluruh provinsi Maluku. Besar kecilnya tiwa tergantung daerah asalnya (Kunst 1945: 223). Tiwas werden traditioneel gebruikt ter begeleiding van dansen en ceremoniën vlak voordat zeereizen werden ondernomen, of tijdens baut-baut, epische liederen die gezongen worden in bootoptochten. Tijdens deze processies werden de gasten van de raja onthaald, en werd de tifa bespeeld op een platform voorin de boot (Kartomi, 1998:820). Soms werden ze gebruikt tijdens een uitdrijving van geesten. Gedurende het bespelen slaan meisjes op de trommen en zingen (Kunst, 1945:222). Tiwa trommen worden door de gehele provincie Molukken bespeeld. De grootte van de tiwa hangt af van het herkomstgebied (Kunst 1945: 223). Het is het dominantste instrument in de muziek van de Molukken. Indonesische musici gebruiken de tiwa tot op de dag van vandaag. Tiwas were traditionally used to accompany dances and ceremonies just before sea voyages were undertaken, or during baut-baut, epic songs sung in boat processions. During these processions the guests of the raja were welcomed and the tifa played on a platform in the front of the boat (Kartomi, 1998: 820). Sometimes they were used during an exorcism to rid the spirits of someone who is "possessed by the devil". During this performance girls beat the drum and sing. (Kunst 1945, p.222). Tiwa drums are found throughout the entire archipelago of the province of Malaku in Indonesia. The size and proportion of tiwa drums may vary depending on the local area. (Kunst 1945, p.223). The drum is the dominant musical instrument in the music of the Malaku province. Indonesian musicians continue to use the tiwa drum in their music today. Malukan folksongs and international popular songs can be found in local media and at celebrations throughout Indonesia.
