Nederlands: Repronegatief. De discussies onder de koloniale bestuurders en de wetenschappers die hen van advies dienden over de oorlog in Atjeh, kunnen ook gezien worden als een voorafschaduwing van de latere opvattingen over het streven naar onafhankelijkheid van de inheemse bevolking. Een vrij sterke stroming meende dat de in wezen goedwillende massa was opgezweept door 'fanatieke moslims'. De bevolking zou tevreden zijn als bij de zo noodzakelijk geachte modernisering het gewoonterecht (adat) ontzien werd. Als men kans zag de geestelijken (ulama) uit te schakelen, dan was de strijd gewonnen. Daarbij werd echter het verlangen naar onafhankelijkheid, zoals dat zelfs nu nog leeft in Atjeh, sterk onderschat. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
