Summary[edit]

Media data and Non-free use rationale
Description Results achieved for protein prediction in the CASP 2020 competition, compared with results achieved in previous years.

The crimson trend-line shows how AlphaFold 1 achieved a significant step-change in 2018 over the rate of progress that had previously been achieved, particularly in respect of the protein sequences considered the most difficult to predict. The orange trend-line shows that by 2020 online prediction servers had been able to learn from and match the gains made by AlphaFold 1, while the best other groups (green trend line) had on average been able to make some improvements on it. However, the black trend-curve shows the degree to which AlphaFold 2 had surpassed this again in 2020, across the board.

The detailed data points for 2018 (small circles) and 2020 (large circles) show the degree of consistency or variation achieved by the most successful predictors, for given levels of difficulty.

Use in article (WP:NFCC#7) AlphaFold
Purpose of use in article (WP:NFCC#8) This file enables the reader to assess and understand the scale of the progress that AlphaFold has brought to protein structure prediction, at least as measured by results in the CASP competition.

Making available this detailed information allows the reader to most fully assess what AlphaFold achieved in the CASP competitions, that established its fame and wide notability, adding greatly to what the reader understands about AlphaFold. An equivalent level of information could not be conveyed without it, in text.

Copyright in this file, to the extent that there is copyright, rests on the choice of information to include, and the way it is presented. These display the nature of the contribution of AlphaFold particularly clearly. A recreated file using the same information displayed in the same would be a derivative work, subject to copyright to the same extent. Therefore we are as well to use the original file, as created by the scientists managing the competition.
Minimal use (WP:NFCC#3) No more is used than is needed for the purpose identified. In this case that requires the whole image, and at a resolution sufficient for the text to be easily read and the data points to be clearly identifiable, and for the 2020 data points to be readily distinguishable from those for 2018. Reduction will not materially reduce the copyright taking, which lies in the design and overall composition of the image, rather than its fine detail.
