(Ostgebiete des Deutschen Reiches unter fremder Verwaltung)
Marktplatz mit Rathaus. Im Vordergrund das Schenkendorff-Denkmal
Tilsit entstand im 15. und 16. Jahrhundert in Anlehnung an eine 1406 erbaute Ordensburg. Die preussisch-deutsche Geschichte ist mit diesem Namen eng verknüpft. Dorthin floh die preussische Königsfamilie vor Napoleon, wo Königin Luise mit ihm zusammentraf. 1807 wurde hier der Friede geschlossen.
Tilsit, an der Memel und der Eisenbahnlinie Insterburg-Memel gelegen, entwickelte sich zu einem ansehnlichen Umschlaghafen, hatte Maschinenbau und landwirtschaftliche Industrien (Tilsiter Käse).

Durch Abtrennung des Memel-Gebiets 1919 erlitt die Stadt schweren wirtschaftlichen Schaden. Seit 1945 steht die teilweise zerstörte Stadt unter sowjetrussischer Verwaltung.
