The brigadereached Waynesboro on the 3d, and bivouacked for th.e night.Having learned of its movements, I bade the hospital farewelland reported for duty. On the 4th, crossed the Blue Ridgeand passed through Charlottesville on our way to TodsTavern. The next day, as we were nearing Tods Tavern,with the Twelfth Cavalry in front and Companies B and I inadvance, under Captain Louis Harman (who had lately beenpromoted from adjutant of our regiment to the captaincyof Company I), we suddenly encountered the advance ofWilsons Division of Cavalry. General Rosser, who wasriding with the advance, immediately ordered a charge, andoff the squadron went, striking the enemy a blow whichcaused a panic and flight without much resistance.
