Die Geste (mudra) erinnert an eine Situation, in der Mara, der Herr aller Begierden, Buddha von seiner Suche nach Erleuchtung abbringen wollte. Buddha rief die Erdgöttin zur Zeugin für sein von Existenz zu Existenz ungebrochenes Bemühen um Erkenntnis an.

Die beiden ersten Schüler des Buddha Mogallana(links) und Sariputta (rechts), Holz lackiert, Birma 19. Jh.
