Summary

Description
English: Bombardment of Foochow(Fuzhou) Arsenal, as part of Battle of Fuzhou. The caption reads: "The Chinese Empire which, in the treaty of Tien-Tsin, had shown the most outstanding bad faith towards the French Government, received the right price for its duplicity, and our brave soldiers who fell in the trap of Bac-Lé were victoriously avenged — the big Fou-Tchéou arsenal, where China had accumulated considerable war material, and where a Chinese fleet of twenty one was also stationed, some buildings have just been completely destroyed by the French fleet under the orders of Admiral Courbet. — On August 23 at two o'clock in the afternoon, firing began on board the gunboats: the Volta, the Duguay-Trouin, the Triomphante, the Villars, the d'Estaing, the Vipère, the Aspic, the Lynx, and the torpedo boats No. 45 and 46. At six o'clock in the evening, the Arsenal was in flames, moreover 9 vessels and 12 junks composing the Chinese fleet were sunk low. — Besides the considerable losses of war material and vessels, the Chinese had 3 to 4,000 men dead or wounded; while on our side we report the loss of 10 men killed and 27 wounded, 14 of them slightly. In transmitting this great victory by telegram to the French Government, Admiral Courbet paid the greatest praise to the staff and crews of the fleet who, he said, displayed unfailing courage. Our naval glory has never shone brighter, and Admiral Courbet and our brave sailors, covering themselves with glory, remained the worthy emulators of the old sea-wolves once commanded by the illustrious Jean Bart."
