A punishment in the British Navy during the days of sail, inflicted on seamen found guilty of neglect or drunkenness. It consisted of their daily tot of grog being diluted with six parts of water instead of the normal three. It was a punishment that fell into disuse around the start of the 20th century.
Taken from an album of sixty-five works on paper documenting Masters' 1857-1861 expedition from England to Southeast Asia with the Royal Marines, on board HMS Chesapeake.
