Sorti 50 ans après la guerre de Sécession, il raconte le déroulement de ce conflit en privilégiant le point de vue sudiste et révisionniste. Il fut ainsi controversé dès sa sortie pour son discours raciste et son apologie du Ku Klux Klan.
