English: One of the first microwave relay systems in the US, a 5 GHz link built by AT&T's manufacturing arm Western Electric in 1946 using military technology that provided telephone service 22 miles between Los Angeles and Catalina island off the coast of California. As a supplement to wire circuits in the communications zone, the Laboratories developed a micro-wave radio system operating at about 5000 megacycles. At that frequency the waves behave like those of light, and a clear straight line path is required. A number of these systems were built by the Western Electric Co. and installed near the end of the war in South Germany and functioned well; one link was over 100 miles long, from Heidelberg to Zugspitze. Usually however, links are about thirty miles long.
