Summary
| Description |
English: The eighth U.S. Army Air Force Consolidated B-24A Liberator built (s/n 40-2376), in 1941. This aircraft was to be transferred to the Royal Air Force, but was kept by the (US) AAF. It flew with RAF camouflage but US markings for the AAF Ferry Command. This aircraft was lost on 5 May 1942, when it had to ditch in the lagoon of Ju Island, Batang Pele Group, in the Netherlands East Indies after running out of fuel while attempting to return to Darwin (Australia). This aircraft had previously been flown by 1Lt Harvey Watkins on 4 Dec 1941 when it attempted to embark on a 1941 super secret pre-war photo recon mission along with its sister ship, B-24A 40-2371 flown by 1Lt Ted S. Faulkner and 2Lt William H. Campbell of the 88th Recon Squadron. Watkins aircraft departed Hamilton Field for Hawaii but was forced to return Sacramento due to mechanical problems, while Faulkner's B-24A aircraft continued on to Hickam Field in the Territory of Hawaii where it landed on 5 Dec 1941 and later became the first American aircraft destroyed with the first string of bombs to fall on Hickam Field on 7 Dec 1941. A similar fate likely awaited this aircraft had it also arrived at Hickam Field as planned. |
