Description
English: Miniature portrait of Arabella Williams (1740-1797), wife of Sir James Hamlyn, 1st Baronet (1735-1811) of Edwinsford, Carmarthenshire, Wales, and Clovelly Court in Devon, Member of Parliament for Carmarthen 1793-1802 and Sheriff of Devon 1767-8. School of Richard Cosway, RA (British, 1742-1821). A full-length double portrait on paper by Cosway of the Hamlyns, walking arm in arm and wearing Van Dyck costume, exists in the Victoria & Albert Museum (E.11-2002). Gold frame with pierced suspension loop, blue glass to the reverse. Oval, 85mm (3 3/8in) high. One of pair with matching portrait of her husband. Pair sold for £1,375 inc. premium at Bonhams Auctioneers, Knightsbridge, London, auction 20767: Fine Portrait Miniatures, 30 May 2013, lot 98[1]
