Description |
English: Henry Grey and his wife sit dejectedly in their parlour, both with pen and ink beside them, divided by a book-covered table. On the wall the prints of Series 1 (Nos. 15574-85) are arranged in two rows, small but recognizable copies with titles. Below these is a thirteenth: 'Precept'; Grey and Thomson preach, facing each other in their respective pulpits; below, a second design, Thomson (right) chases Grey, holding up his book ('Christian Instructor'). This is probably 'Precept. Example', the pl. published by Nimmo, listed on p. 61. Mrs. Grey says: 'Alas! the world is teeming with those abominable Caricatures, and they are all against our party. But for N° 3 I should have sworn the author of them was a hirling [sic] of the Christian Instructor. It is said there is tobe a dozn more'. Beside her is a paper: 'To the Editor of the Edinr Observer Sir yours Anglicana'. Grey, one foot regally but awkwardly on a footstool, says: 'O, Anglicana, bitterly do I repent entering into this controversy. For what with Caricatures & Pamphlets, we are sorely beset on every side. I fear we are really undone'. His elbow rests on the 'Apocrypha, canon type'. The child of No. 15575 stands by her mother, saying, 'Mamma, where did you get so many funny pictures of Papa & you & Uncle Clodpole Hobnail'.

This image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag. Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag. |
