Hacienda de Cumaral en las cuerdas de un violin, van tirando con la otra de las fibras, á sacudidas y á partir de labase, hasta dejarlas completamente separadas. Esta operación sencilla, exige, no obstante,alguna destreza, y da lugar á una escena muy pintoresca. Los churoyes se dividen el trabajosentados de cuatro en cuatro, ó mejor que sentados, en cuclillas, el uno al lado del otro: unindio coge el cogollo y va separando las hojuelas; un segundo las hiende por ambos lados conla uña; un tercero arranca las fibras, y el último acaba de separar la hilaza, forma puñados conella y la iguala cortándola por su extremidad. Esta máquina viviente funciona con sorpren-dente regularidad. Los puñados de fibras resultantes son luego batidos y lavados, extrayéndose de ellos laparte parenquimatosa y mucilaginosa, y atados cuidadosamente en haces, se ponen á blan-quear al sol, tendidos en los árboles.

574 AMÉRICA PINTORESCA Los indios ejecutan esas tareas con gran celeridad, sin preocuparse poco ni mucho de lasespinas ascendentes de qué están armados los pedículos y las hojas. La resistencia de las cuerdas de cumare es enorme: un hilo torcido, de un milímetro dediámetro, no se quiebra á menos de un peso de diez kilogramos. Tres hilos del mismo diá-metro soportan quince kilos. En remojo su peso aumenta en un cuarto. Este cúmulo decualidades auguran un excelente porvenir industrial á la comarca, el dia que la fibra deeste árbol, que tanto abunda en los Llanos, se explote debidamente y se trasporte á Europapor la vía del Meta y el Orinoco.
