Description
Français : Portrait d'Alphonse de Chavanges, aide-de-camp du maréchal Augereau
English: Portrait of Alphonse de Chavanges, aide-de-camp of Marshall Augereau. The sitter wears the uniform of a squadron commander, the Chevalier Cross of the Order of Legion of Honour partially covered by the Cross of Swedish Military Order of Sword (the latter was added much later). He is holding a letter (dispatch). On the letter can be read: "De Gironne 1809 (?)/ Par le Mar(echal)/ Duc De Castiglione" (i.e. Charles Pierre Francois Augereau, Duc de Castiglione). Chavanges, stepbrother and aide-de-camp of Marshal Augereau, is portrayed between 24 May and 11 December 1809, during the third siege of Girona. His chief, Marshal Augereau can be recognised on left side in the background, among the horsemen.
