A hunter mounts a fleet horseand arms himself with a strong bamboo pole having a steel spear-head at theend; then he rides into pig country and puts up his quarry. The pigbreaks cover and the race for life begins. At first sight you would not sup-pose that the pig was making any great headway, but when the horse tries torun it down the mistake is found out. The short, stubby legs of the boar cancarry it over the ground at a great rate, but unless it can reach cover at areasonable distance its pace begins to flag and the hunter gets his chance.Riding up alongside the fleeing animal, he plunges his spear between theboars shoulders and kills it at once. THE PECCARY. beating up a tiger, they will disturb a boar. The old rascal sniffs the air andmakes up its mind which way it will go. If it is forward, away it dashes. Butsometimes it awaits events and quietly sneaks into a piece of dense jungle.When the beaters come quite close, the pig charges, and immediately thereare shrieks and yells and a wild scrambling to right and left. Then stones areseen to fly, and with a few angry grunts the pig vanishes. Ceylon is the true home of the pig, for it grows larger and fiercer therethan anywhere else in the world. Everyone has heard of learned pigs. Asa matter of fact, the domestic swine show great intelligence and are quiteclever. Their hearing is good, and their sense of smell is very delicate, whilethey are capable of great affection. Pigs run swiftly and can leap several feet inthe air.
