Summary[edit]

This series of 5 panels were excerpted from the April 16 & April 17, 1951 Li'l Abner strips. Although this is still presumably under copyright, inclusion here qualifies for Fair Use under US Copyright law because:

  • It is used for a non-commercial and hopefully educational purpose.
  • It is illustrative of the subject:
It is a drawing of Al Capp
The drawing is by Al Capp.
It gives an insight into Capp's sense of humor.
It gives an insight into how Capp views the comic strip business.
It mentions Milton Caniff, who is also mentioned in the article on Capp.
  • It is only a small part of the overall work, i.e. 5 panels from an estimated 65,000 panels.
  • It should not affect the commercial viability of the copyright.
