Text Appearing Before Image: Braddock set outfrom Alexandria, Virginia, April 8, 1755, and it was not untilJuly 8 that he reached the neighborhood of Fort Duquesne.The fatal battle followed. So great consternation succeededthe unlooked-for disaster that Braddocks Defeat is oneof the best known incidents in American colonial history. The frontier was left unprotected. Under the guidance ofFrench leaders, as well as spurred on by the remembranceof their own wrongs, the Indians pitilessly wreaked ven-geance on the whites. They systematically ravaged notonly the western border of Pennsylvania, but the wholefrontier of the British colonies. In Pennsylvania the Indianscame through the gaps in the mountains and encamped onthe Susquehanna about thirty miles above John Harrissferry (Harrisburg) and from that point ravaged Cumberland,Lancaster, Berks, and Northampton counties, and came towithin fifty miles of Philadelphia.
