Summary

Description
English: A Tribute To Robert Whitehead. Robert Whitehead (January 3, 1823 – November 14, 1905) was an English engineer born in Lancashire and this monument in his honour stands in a small park next to Bury Town Hall.

In 1866 he developed the first self-propelled torpedo and thus introduced the world to a weapon that almost changed the course of history during both World Wars. More history here.

In 1912, Robert Whitehead's great grand-daughter, Frances, met and married a submarine commander - Captain Von Trapp (of The Sound Of Music fame).
