Summary

Description

Apollo 14 Hasselblad image from film magazine 68/MM - EVA-2.
Part of this photograph is Figure 3-19 of the Apollo 14 Preliminary Science Report (SP-272), which has the following caption:

Closeup stereophotograph of fillet on White Rock near station C1.

The text of the Report states:

White Rock. The White Rock (fig. 3-19) from which sample 14082 was taken is approximately 1.5 m wide, has steep to overhanging sides, and a poorly developed fillet that is disturbed by soil from the LM pilot’s (LMP) feet.

The text later states:

Sample 14082. Sample 14082 is an example of the so-called White Rocks. The sample was apparently chipped from a 1-m boulder at station C1. Other boulders in the immediate vicinity are as much as 10 m across. The boulder from which the sample was chipped is a fragmental rock with 1-cm dark-and-light clasts set in a very light-gray matrix. One indistinct subrounded dark clast is 6 cm across. Numerous probable micrometeorite impact pits are visible. A photograph of the boulder (fig. 3-19) shows what is believed to be the piece chipped off and the indentation left by the sampling.
Sample 14082 is a light-matrix breccia with a relatively well-mixed matrix, and was collected from this rock just below the hammer in the photo.
