| Description | A U.S. Navy McDonnell F-4B-14-MC Phantom II (BuNo 150635) of Fighter Squadron VF-41 "Black Aces" approaches a Douglas A-3B Skywarrior (BuNo 142660) of Heavy Attack Squadron VAH-11 Det.8 "Checkertails" for inflight refueling. Both squadrons were assigned to Carrier Air Wing 7 (CVW-7) aboard the aircraft carrier USS Independence (CVA-62) in 1964. Note that VAH-11 Det.8 kept its CVW-1 tail code "AB". |

1964; Note: the date given (1 July 1965) is improbable, as VF-41 was operating off Vietnam at that time and VAH-11 Det.8 was working up with USS Forrestal (CVA-59) for a deployment to the Mediterranean Sea. Updated Note: It is possible that the photograph was taken during the USS Independence CVW-7 deployment to Norland and Mediterranean from Sept 8, 1964 to Nov 5, 1964. During that time VF-41 carried AG code and VAH-11 DET 8 carried AB code. |
