Summary

Description

Anowar was referred to the UK EMT treatment centre displaying signs and symptoms of diphtheria including a coating at the back of his throat and a swollen neck. His symptoms were severe enough that the team decided that he needed diphtheria antitoxin immediately, and his father agreed once the process had been explained to him.

At 9am in the morning Anowar was weak, quiet and lethargic. By 4pm in the afternoon, after receiving treatment, he was already feeling much better, smiling and bouncing around again, playing on the bed with one of his brothers. He played with a balloon with the EMT staff.

He was kept in the treatment centre until the next morning, and after such a successful recovery he has now been discharged.

But Anowar’s story doesn’t end there. He is still living in Kutupalong camp with his extended family, including 11 other children. All of these children and anybody else who has been in close contact with Anowar recently now need to be traced in order to also be checked for signs of Diphtheria and given precautionary antibiotics. This is an essential part of the efforts to stop the spread of the outbreak.
