Summary

Description 208-PU-53A-14: Doolittle Raid, April 18, 1942. Original caption, “In April 1942, the U.S. and the world at large was electrified by an announcement by President Franklin D. Roosevelt that American fliers had carried the Battle of the Pacific to the heart of the Japanese empire with a surprising and daring raid on military targets at Tokyo, Yokohoma, Osaka, Kobe, and other Rising Sun industrial centers. Reasons of security have presented the full story, the story of the Shangri-La where the flight of medium North American B-25 bombers started – from being told until now. Today, the U.S. Navy presents in a dramatic series of pictures the take-off of the dangerous mission, headed by Major General James H. “Jimmy” Doolittle, USA, from the deck of USS Hornet (CV 8), April 18, 1942.” From NHHC: Doolittle Raid on Japan, April 1942. Nose art on B-25B "Hari Carrier" (USAAF serial # 40-2249), photographed while the plane was parked on board USS Hornet (CV-8), en route to the raid launching point. This aircraft was mission plane # 11, piloted by Captain C. Ross Greening. It attacked targets in the Yokohama area on 18 April 1942. At NHHC as NH 97501. U.S. Navy Photograph, now in the collections of the National Archives. (2017/05/02).
