Description
Half-length, three-quarter view portrait features Mary Anne Jewins Burnett (Mrs. Charles Burnett): woman in a white gown with an empire waistline. Light-colored hair appears from under her white cap and she wears a large, burgundy jewel on the sheer portion of her dress. Johnson was the first African American painter to make his living as an artist.
