Portion used

The entire cover: because the image is cover art, a form of product packaging, the entire image is needed to identify the product, properly convey the meaning and branding intended, and avoid tarnishing or misrepresenting the image.

Low resolution?

The copy is of sufficient resolution for commentary and identification but lower resolution than the original cover. Copies made from it will be of inferior quality, unsuitable as artwork on pirate versions or other uses that would compete with the commercial purpose of the original artwork.

Purpose of use

Main infobox. The image is used for identification in the context of critical commentary of the work for which it serves as cover art. It makes a significant contribution to the user's understanding of the article, which could not practically be conveyed by words alone. The image is placed in the infobox at the top of the article discussing the work, to show the primary visual image associated with the work, and to help the user quickly identify the work and know they have found what they are looking for. Use for this purpose does not compete with the purposes of the original artwork, namely the artist's providing graphic design services to music concerns and in turn marketing music to the public.

Replaceable?

As musical cover art, the image is not replaceable by free content; any other image that shows the packaging of the music would also be copyrighted, and any version that is not true to the original would be inadequate for identification or commentary.

Other information

Use of the cover art in the article complies with Wikipedia non-free content policy and fair use under the copyright law of the United States as described above.

The image I have chosen to upload is the cover of the album 1+9+8+2 by rock band Status Quo. The image came from the website Amazon.com, here is the link:The copyright holder is Amazon.com. This image I have chosen to upload will be used in the Status Quo page, in the discography section. The image itself will be placed on the 1+9+8+2 page in the right-hand information box that states information about the album, the image will be placed there, the whole purpose is to show anyone who uses that page what the particular album cover looks like, as there has been no picture of the album there in the past. The image shall be used in no other page but that one that I have stated.

Fair use for 1+9+8+2[edit]

Though the picture is subject to copyright I, EndlessWires 11:04, 11 August 2007 (UTC) feel it is covered by the U.S. fair use laws because:

  • It is a low resolution copy of a CD album cover;
  • It does not limit the copyright owner's rights to sell the CD album in any way;
  • Scanned copies could not be used to make illegal copies of the album artwork on another CD
  • It is being used for informational purposes only, not for profit.

Edits to the page[edit]

This page in which the image was used (1+9+8+2), had recently been put up for deletion. I am writing this to inform you, that I have made changes to page. The changes I have made are as follows:

  • I have included more information about album itself, stating that the album does not feature original drummer John Coghlan.
  • I have also put down a few links to certain website that have to made pages about the album. The first website is the website StarPlus, which had a Status Quo discography, and the second link being the Official Status Quo website. So I hope these changes are substantial enough to stop the page from being put up for deletion.
