The Beetle or Type 1 was built from 1938 to 2003, starting out with a 1.1 rear mounted air cooled flat four engine.
1952, got quarter vent windows
1953, Split rear window goes, now one piece.
1956, bumpers got over riders.
1960, pull action door handle replaced with push button.
1961, semaphore indicators replaced with lights on mudguards.
1963, VW crest on hood was removed.
1964, Indicators larger in size
1965, Larger windshield, slimmer posts.
1966, Square door button, now round.
1967, Sloped back headlights, now vertical.
1968, New bumpers with rubber strip
1973, Larger screen, smaller hood
The Beetle was also assembled in Australia from 1954, by 1960 sheet metal pressed there and in 1967 many other components produced there. Reverted to just assembly from 1968-76
