Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show

Portion used

Front cover only

Low resolution?

Low-rez and greatly reduced

Purpose of use

To show the self-referential aspect of music group which recorded song about "being on the cover of the Rolling Stone" and the publication's response by putting them on the cover. This image is very much about the magazine, is not decorative and is an important cultural artifact. Because the song by Dr. Hook challenged the publication to put them on the cover, the readers were fascinated to see if the publication would give in to the request. When they did, they had the last laugh by not putting a photograph on the cover but instead using a caricature.

Replaceable?

Irreplaceable

Other information

The cover itself then became something of a media event.
