Wikipedia:WikiProject U.S. Roads/California/History/When each route was added to the state highway system

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a list of additions to the state highway system, indexed by current number if applicable. All renumberings are shown; if none are indicated, and the route was added before 1964, the only renumbering was in 1964.

Keep in mind:

  • Routes added by the first and second bond issues were numbered during or soon after the second (1916).
  • Routes added before 1917, other than by the bond issues, were not numbered until 1917.
  • After 1917, routes were numbered when they were added to the system. The California Highway Commission initially chose the numbers, but, starting in 1947, all laws establishing new routes assigned numbers. Some early and special cases are as follows:
    • All routes were first codified into one law in 1935 (c. 29). Several routes (203-206 and an extension of 77) were added that year, and in 1937 the legislature assigned them numbers (which may have already been used by the CHC). Similar procedures were followed with Routes 207 (added in 1937, numbered in 1939) and 209 (added in 1939, numbered in 1943).
    • A 1939 law stated that if the federal government built a certain road, it would become a state highway. It was added to the normal list as Route 210 in 1943; presumably it had been built and taken over.
    • Route 208 (1939) was assigned its number when first added.
    • Several routes were erroneously assigned numbers that were already in use. These were corrected, usually during the next session: Route 252 (1947) became 226 (1949), Route 207 (1949) became 232 (1951), Route 233 (1955) became 235 (1957), and a second Route 291 was added in 1963 (the 1964 renumbering made fixing this error unnecessary). Route 252 was not in use in 1947, but the law strangely added a number that was higher than the rest for an extension of existing Route 226, making it section 252, and placing it after the section (251) about primary routes, which it referred to, but that section had just been repealed.
  • The years are when routes were legislatively added to or deleted from the system, not when they were taken over for maintenance or relinquished (if they were). Where known, the law chapter is given. Route changes are also based on when the description was changed to allow them, not when they were actually made.
  • Routes were not maintained within cities until 1933, and not all details of how the descriptions were interpreted are known. This especially affects San Francisco.
  • There may be the occasional typo or misinterpretation. If you want to be absolutely sure, check the applicable laws.

State Route 85
  • US 101 in San Jose to SR 17
    • 1957 as Route 239 (c. 23); became Route 114 in 1961 (c. 1146)
      • Note: the initial definition of Route 239 (mostly I-280) said "to Route 2 near San Jose". This is inconclusive, but other evidence shows that it used what is now SR 85 southeast of SR 17: the 1959 law creating the F&E System included "Route 239 from Route 2 south of San Jose to Route 5"; the rest was added by the clause including Interstates. The 1961 law creating Route 292 (SR 87) specified that it was to end at "Route 239 in the vicinity of Pearl Avenue".
      • Route 239 was moved in 1961 to "the junction of Routes 68 and 69", and was removed from the F&E System descriptions, as that was part of I-680. At the same time, the F&E System description of Route 114 (and Route 114 itself) was extended to cover this.
      • Presumably what is now I-880, and was then I-680, between I-280 and US 101 was Route 5 until 1961. This would have replaced the old surface routing, which was closer to current I-280 than I-880. Route 5 was moved to present I-280 between SR 17 and US 101 in 1961, replacing part of Route 115 (which had been moved there in 1959).
