Hi again! I see you ran into DASHbot, who tried to remove an image of the MSU seal. Because that seal is copyrighted, it's being used on Wikipedia as fair use; according to our policies and guidelines on non-free content such as the seal, fair use media can only be used in articles, not on project pages such as your course page. questions about images

Hi, two questions:

1) Why can't the seal be used on our page as well? It's an MSU-affiliated page? If we can't use this one, I'll just get a different one... but I need the access to upload pictures...

Sorry, I missed this until this morning. The reason why is because, except for very circumscribed uses of "fair use" images, the only images that can be used on Wikipedia must be also free for others to use (nearly) however they wish. Fair use images, which are not freely licensed or in the public domain, can be used only in articles, and only when there could be no possible free equivalent that could be used instead. It leads to some silly restrictions in cases like this, but there's basically no way around it.--Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 16:24, 18 January 2011 (UTC)

2) How do I get access to uploading pictures? I would like my students to be able to upload their pictures to the page, and I would like to add some other pictures to our course page as well.

Pictures can be uploaded by navigating to Wikimedia Commons, the media archive for Wikipedia and the sister projects, and then clicking the "upload file" link in the left sidebar. Your campus ambassadors should be able to walk through some of the intricacies with you and/or your students; there are detailed instructions on the upload page, although they can be rather confusing at first. Once files are uploaded, they can be added to the course page using the file name, which it looks like you know how to do.

PS: You can sign your comments in a discussion using four tildes, and you can indent a section to indicate that you're replying to the previous one by using one or more colons at the beginning. First off, Welcome to Wikipedia! :) The reason for my note today is to let you know that I will be the Coordinating Online Ambassador for the Media and Telecommunication Policy project/class. How "real" is group 9 (Spectrum auctions)

Hi Professor Obar. I signed on as a mentor for the three students in group 9, Spectrum auctions. I am curious as to whether this group is active or not. I note that two of the three students in the group have not yet completed the relatively simple tasks they were to have completed over one month ago: "Due: 1/25 - Create a Wikipedia Account Due: 1/25 - Link account to the page (include name), add picture, write something about yourself"

Are the students who have not signed on still enrolled in the class? Should I disconnect from this group and perhaps look for another, potentially more serious, group of students? Cheers. N2e (talk) 03:16, 28 February 2011 (UTC)

Yes the students are in the class and are participating (all three just took a class test). I would warn that the students in my class are undergrads and as a result, some will not be as eager as others to participate (though some are quite ready to go!) I am also moving things along at a pace that I feel is appropriate for a class of 100 students. While updating is of course the goal, there must be a certain amount of structure so that I can grade them all. I have asked the students to wait until they complete an introductory research assignment on the topics they've chosen before updating any Wikipedia sites. Thank you for your note. This wasn't a huge deal at all. I modified what was written, and in fact will discuss his suggestion with students (though I have to find out about this "diff" function). I wrote a detailed response on his talk page if interested, and asked that future edits to the course page be discussed on the discussion page first. Thanks again. A "diff" is the link of each individual edit. When you got to your watchlist (which I recommend students and you use, cause it makes things a ton easier) you can click on "diff" and it will give you the most updated individual edit made. The URL is that "diff" that he is talking about. Click on the article's history or "hist" and you will see each and every diff made on that article. If you lose something, it is always in the history and if the article has been deleted, it can always be brought back by admins using their tools. Nothing can be lost. :)

As for the post, I seen your response and that was much better than I put. I felt that since you are the Professor saying part of your lesson plan was a "waste of time" wasn't the best way to go. That is what I addressed, but you are more than welcome to use his suggestion if it makes your job easier. :) As always, let me know if I can be of assistance. Take Care...Neutralhomer • Talk • Coor. Bare URLs and Full citations

Hi Prof. Obar. I have converted one of the two bare URLs references on your User page to a full citation, as an example for you and your students. While a bare URL can serve as a verifiable source in Wikipedia, and is better than no source, {{full}} citations are requested by Wikipedia policy which should include meta-information about the source, the date of the material (if one is provided in the source) and the date the material was accessed by the editor who used it in Wikipedia. Sir, it's been a while since our last interaction. I apologize that I was spent to near exhaustion, and anguished to the resultant extent; I was absent with support when needed, and rightfully deserved. This very thread is a reminder of that anguish, and to be frank; The counsel given is sufficiently flawed, and practically irrelevant. There are considerations which have not been extended! This effectively means; You were only told half of the relevant information! In time, we can revisit the merits of the article you were attempting to publish. And should it become necessary, those merits can be considered at any appropriate level. I intend to ensure equal and fair treatment is extended to you, as it should be extended to all users of good faith.

I am stepping back to some of my previous rolls. And assisting you, and this class, is an area I will incorporate diligent resolve, to regain lost momentum. One thing of certainty, you won't have to clamor to see opinions from the ambassador element of this endeavor. Mostly I have been told: I provide too much depth. Yes, for a while I thought I was supposed to look over the article when the students came to ask for my assistance, but I realize now I'm supposed to be checking up on it regularly and offering feedback. I'm already reading it over as I write this, and it's off to a good start! I'm not very familiar with court case articles, so I may have to look around the talkpages of a few in order to find out all the wikiprojects they fall into the scope of. Regarding editing the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, it seems that others have brought up the idea of splitting the Gambling part from the SAFE Port act. The user "2005" for the last few years have edited and reverted it back. I would like the avoid a edit war so is there something that we could do about this? Hi, I saw your note on the DYK talk page. Perhaps next time your class does a project, it can start it in on its own userpage on Wikipedia, and when it's ready, move it to the mainspace. About userspace sub-pages

I just saw your reply at the "template talk" page; thank you. My guess is we should be able to move forward with the information you provided there, that the consensus there will permit that. I just thought I'd also provide a quick follow-up to user Yoninah's preceding comment, since I'm not sure you'll want to wade through the "Subpages" information page he linked to, and you'll naturally want to prevent a recurrence of this problem.

You don't have any subpages as I'm writing this, I see; if you want some, or your students do, all that needs to be done is to create "links" to not-yet-existing pages, ( e.g. User:Jaobar/Sandbox, User:Jaobar/Workspace1, User:Jaobar/Workspace2, etc. ). Then once you "save" the text that includes these links to not-yet-existing pages, you'll see that they display in red. Just click on one of those "redlinks", add whatever content you want to the page you "land" on, and save that. Next time you see the link it'll be a regular "blue" link to an existing page. Or if you'd rather, i.e. if you don't want students editing one of your personal subpages, I think it would be fine, as well, for you to create an alternate account for your class, with an account name of something like, "TC210Spring2011Jaobar", or whatever, so long as the only person who ever logs into it is you. You'd identify it on its user page and as the first entry on its talk page as an having been created by yourself, create the "blank" subpages (workspaces) you want, and then never log in as that "user/account" again. Just edit its existing subpages pages as "Jaobar", and have your students edit under their own account names. Don't disclose the password to your students, of course.

As I say, I think this would be okay, but please check with whoever the right campus ambassador would be for your participation here, or perhaps with Annie Lin if you want to be doubly sure.

May I also suggest that if your class picks an existing article to expand via this process (i.e. on a userspace subpage) that you might also create a new section on the "live" article's talk page to let other users know that your class is working on an expansion or rewrite? Other users, i.e. non-members of your class, will still be able to edit the article while your students are expanding a copy of it in user-space, of course, but posting a notification might also help other editors, non-members of your project, avoid duplicating your class' effort, too. I didn't realize the infrastructure for the campus participation projects was anything like so well-defined already, so my suggestion re directory names and such, above, is probably moot. Please check with your the appropriate contact people on your team for clarification. I've informed user Neelix about the "template talk" thread for the Free Press article, btw, and have asked him to put the "DYKMake" template into proper order to give credit where it's due, since I don't know how to do that myself, and since he's listed on your project page as the "mentor" for the Free Press group, aka "Group 22". Logos and images

The explanation on that talk page is correct: because logos are not freely licensed, they can't be used at all on Wikipedia outside of articles. What we've been doing instead is using the most iconic free image of the campus we can find. The "Show preview" button

Hi!

• I noticed your work on Wikipedia:Village_pump_(proposals)#Learn_to_be_a_Wikipedia_Administrator_-_New_class_at_MSU required a great number of edits.

Are you aware that you can see a preview of the work you're doing (to check everything looks good, and check spellings and punctuation etc.) before submitting the work as a finished draft?

Just to the right of the Save page button, you'll see the Show preview button. By using this to check our work before saving the page, we can save a lot of space on the Wikimedia database servers, and other editors a lot of bother trying to keep track of the page history. Please try to get into the habit of using it.

• Also, it's good practice to always leave a short comment about what work we did in the edit summary (the text entry field just above the Save page and Show preview buttons.)

This helps other editors tell at a glance what you have done. Sometimes, without an edit summary, your work may be considered thoughtless, and be undone.
