re: Yoganada Image Gallery

You asked a very good question. Unfortunately, I don't have an easy answer and haven't had the time to really investigate it. (And probably won't have time for several weeks at least.) If no one beats me to it, I'll try to look into it when I get back. Sorry I can't be more help in the short term. Rossami (talk) 19:02, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)

You moved this to List of ages of Roman Catholic popes since 1500. That is a mouthful. The cut off date of 1500 will change when more data is added to the list (as has happened in the past). Also, the other lists involving popes do not include the extra phrase "Roman Catholic", and note that the Pope article is not a disambiguation page precisely because the Roman Catholic usage of the term is so dominant. These two aspects make the name extra long for no apparently good reason. Please tell me your policy reason for this move and why such a long name. Also do you plan to fix all the links to this article? Thanks. NoSeptember 19:58, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I would suggest dropping "Roman Catholic" since it is inconsistent with common practice of all the pope related lists and articles. I'd drop "since 1500" for now too. If someone later creates more related lists and they need to be distinguished from each other, that would be the time to add such a detail to the title. I am unaware of anyone with current plans to do so. Note that List of popes is very long covering 2000 years and I am unaware of anyone suggesting breaking into several articles. Ages of Popes has less information per pope and would be much shorter even if it extended to 2000 years. List of ages of popes seems adequate to me if you insist on identifying this article as a list. NoSeptember 20:21, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the fix. Later, I'll go back and fix the links to avoid the redirects. NoSeptember 20:38, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I don't know what else to do with this list to make it worthy as a FLC. In fact, right now I'd probably just delete the "youngest popes" section and nothing more. NoSeptember 20:52, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Transwiki team

Hi there! Thanks for the invite, but I'm afraid I'm far too busy to start moving articles to Wiktionary. I'd be happy to do a bunch of tagging, though. Yours, Radiant_>|< 10:14, Jun 24, 2005 (UTC)

  • By the way, your feedback is appreciated on Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion/Proposal. Yours, Radiant_>|< 10:34, Jun 24, 2005 (UTC)
    • And to answer your question, the link on WP:TFD should explain that policy. It doesn't presently have speedies, except for patent nonsense and the usual stuff. Radiant_>|< 23:27, Jun 24, 2005 (UTC)

        • No, it's policy alright. That subpage was created recently because the TFD header was overly long. But it's been in use in precisely this way for a long time (not to mention being roughly similar to VFD and CFD policy). Radiant_>|< 10:26, Jun 25, 2005 (UTC)

Spangineer article

Wow! Looks like I coined a new term... or maybe I'm not as creative as I like to think I am. If I am the originator, the author of the article got it wrong – "spangineer" is defined as "an engineer that speaks Spanish", not "an engineer from Spain". But hey, what can you expect from a vandal =). Thanks for pointing it out to me. --Spangineer (háblame) 10:53, Jun 24, 2005 (UTC)

Nonsense, eh? That hurts =). Still though, how many people get an article on their user name? As for the admin thing, I don't think I've made any major flub ups, and you were involved in the most heated discussion I've ever been in (over the featured lists with Michael Hardy and others). I've done a fair amount of systematic editing - stub sorting, fixing disambig pages, adding stock ticker symbols to companies, welcoming noobies, participating in the Wikisyntax project, etc., so my edit count is a bit inflated. I wouldn't think that would be a problem, since I've done lots of other stuff too. So, I guess, yeah I would accept. Thanks alot for nominating me! I'll check back later today or tomorrow to answer the questions on the nomination page. --Spangineer (háblame) 13:55, Jun 25, 2005 (UTC)

New data available

Hello, I wrote a custom program to provide the data similar to what was available before. I left a message on the project talk page but for quick reference the link is Wikipedia talk:Most wanted stubs/20050623-triddle. Thanks for letting me know how I could help you, that was a very fun challenge. Triddle 06:45, Jun 26, 2005 (UTC)

Hi again, I tried to clean it up but I was not able to do much. I put a new list of 250 in there, minus the Puerto Rico articles and another set of articles that looked like it was of similar nature. Triddle 21:50, Jun 26, 2005 (UTC)

I expanded the intro a little - I was wondering what else you think an intro should include. Thanks. Guettarda 16:40, 26 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I'm sorry to hear that Richard is giving you trouble. Isn't he amazing? I don't get people like that. And it's not like this was a borderline case in terms of that article he fought so hard for. Well hopefully he'll leave me alone, but thanks for the heads up. I was actually a bit afraid that he was going to try to sabotage my admin candidacy, which is why I've held off on that for awhile. --Woohookitty 30 June 2005 01:33 (UTC)

The Scarlet Letter

Haha. I thought about sending you a note about that, just in case it might influence your comments in my RfA nom =). Dull and boring? Phew, I don't think so. I mean, it's no action thriller, but the depth of that book is incredible—the only book I've read that portrays the pain of guilt better is Crime and Punishment. And the reminder for me as a Christian against legalism/judging others is helpful as well. I agree with you, Dickens is great too; A Tale of Two Cities and Oliver Twist are right up there in my favorite books list. Walden for me was a bit unrealistic... I've heard that Thoreau regularly went home to do his laundry and stuff, for example. That kind of destroys the "experience nature/simple living" theme for me. And it doesn't help that I don't agree with most of his conclusions. But that's politics, and I try to avoid those getting into those on wikipedia =). --Spangineer (háblame) June 29, 2005 21:03 (UTC)

Nope, I haven't read The Pickwick Papers, so I'll have to add that to the ever growing list of books I have to read. Now that I think about it, I'm not sure that I've read Huck Finn in its entirety... the problem is that when I was younger I read a ton of very abridged versions of classic books, so I know how all the stories go, but that makes it difficult to remember if I ever read the real thing. I should read it again, in any case, and then The Scarlet Letter, and compare =). I'll admit, it's been a few years since I read The Scarlet Letter, so maybe my view of the book is somewhat romanticized. Sounds like I should quit Wikipedia for awhile so I have more time to read! And here you are, giving me even more responsibilities with this admin thing ;). --Spangineer (háblame) June 30, 2005 15:35 (UTC)

  • The first section was somewhat confusing, and I assumed that it was the main reason why the article was chosen for Collaboration of the Week. It'd probably be easier to create an entirely new lead section than salvage the old lead section from what it looked like.

image loading problems

Hi - Another issue that occasionally shows up is general slowness. If a page has lots of images and the site is really slow, the image loads can time out and the browser ends up displaying a generic "broken image" image. Perhaps perversely, clearing your browser's cache can sometimes cause this problem. -- Rick Block (talk) July 4, 2005 20:04 (UTC)

I had rather hoped to say "Conlon gon" but the joke is ruined by my decision to expand Conlon rather than delete it. On a technical note, I did not violate the 3RR since the forth edit was an attempted compromise, not a revert. Anyhow, I dispute the notion that it is controversial. Wikipedia:Deletion policy/Teletraffic Engineering

Thanks for the heads up. I was unaware that this had happened, but it is very wrong. The 'policy consensus' discussions are not a centralized vote to delete a lot of articles - rather, they are a discussion forum that has, on several occasions, been able to set a guideline for VFD. None of the pages you mention were ever seriously nominated for deletion (whatlinkshere shows no daily archive) - although judging by the quality, they could benefit from some serious cleaning up. My advice would be to remove all those tags. I believe in the central discussion, some people indicated they wanted to read through all of it and clean it up, they may be willing to help. IFD again

Please be more careful when listing images at WP:IFD. For example, on July 6 you listed Image:Peaches and Bongo1.jpg, saying that it has no source. It has a source clearly indicated. Also, you failed to tag the actual image with {{ifd}}, and you did not notify the author. dbenbenn | talk 15:41, 15 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hiya. I saw your response over on the Help Desk (re: Vandalism), and thought you might be able to give me some advice on a related topic: Certain internet ne'er-do-wells have been going around and systematically removing and deleting (i.e., VfD) content they don't agree with, or attempting to add misinformation to articles for "entertainment" purposes. While it isn't outright vandalism, it does go against the spirit of Wikipedia. I would be interested in any guidance on what protocols, if any, are in place to prevent this.

"From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked." (Luke 12:48, NIV) Never was a truer word spoken. I feel empowered, yes, but not in the "oooh cool delete button!" way I was kind of expecting. Already I feel the weight of the responsibility I have now been entrusted with, a weight that will no doubt reduce given time. Thank you for believing in me. :) GarrettTalk 10:16, 22 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations! It's my pleasure to let you know that, consensus being reached, you are now an administrator. You should read the relevant policies and other pages linked to from the administrators' reading list before carrying out tasks like deletion, protection, banning users, and editing protected pages such as the Main Page. Most of what you do is easily reversible by other sysops, apart from page history merges and image deletion, so please be especially careful with those. You might find the new administrators' how-to guide helpful. Cheers! -- Cecropia | explains it all ® 02:36, 25 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Your note about my note

Hello back. I'm also enjoying Wikipedia because of its community spirit, this place is just great! And thanks for noticing my noticing! :) I found your user page via the vfd discussion on Liene Buldure, a Latvian streaker. And you're right - Latvians are not very fond of being mixed-up with Lithuanians, but there are many other things to worry about when talking about how others view us. For example, Riga has recently become a destination for British stag parties[1] with all the crap that comes with it... But I don't worry much about that either. --Jūzerisfeedback appreciated 19:18, 25 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for reviewing my n00b admin actions. I certainly agree with your recreation now that I see the proper article you've put in its place. I have to admit that when I deleted it, it certainly seemed like there was no assertion of notability, except that he had a "big dick" (or something like that). Anyway, I just confirmed that a quick Google search would have established notability, and am a little embarassed that I didn't do so with this one, like I did with most of the others. I'm going to be sure to do that in the future. So I don't think this needs VfD. Again thanks! --Dmcdevit·t 04:56, July 26, 2005 (UTC)
Thanks, I think the article probably would survive VfD now. This chap is, as one might say, "prominent in his field." His notability "sticks out a mile". But having a dildo named after you, now I'd just love to get that one into the VfD precedents list.  :) --Tony Sidaway|Talk 09:20, 26 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

A request

Hey there. You've been doing some great work transwikiing. I saw the note about using a script to do transwikiing on your user page. FYI, there is currently no Wiktionary bot; I used to have it, but the recent software upgrade broke it. Since then, I've been looking around for a replacement, and meanwhile the backlog has been building (from zero it's now at ~250). I was just wondering if you'd be willing to share your script so I can continue helping with the transwikis as well. I hope this doesn't sound presumptuous or anything in asking for a copy of your own work, but I just think I can help out. Thanks! --Dmcdevit·t 05:41, July 26, 2005 (UTC)

Quick answer: it's in User:Cryptic/standard.js and b:User:Cryptic/standard.js, if you speak enough JavaScript to separate out the relevant bits. Slow answer: I've been meaning to separate out the relevant bits myself, make them skin-neutral, and document them anyway; since you asked, I'll see about doing so today or tomorrow, most likely, and put them into User:Cryptic/transwiki.js. —Cryptic (talk) 05:57, 26 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
That'll be great. I'm about as fluent in Javascript as I am in any other computer language (meaning zero :), although I did make a BASIC program on my graphing calculator once), so sorry about that. I may need some instructions. Well, thanks! --Dmcdevit·t 06:38, July 26, 2005 (UTC)
Okay, I tried out the script, but uh, I had problems on the other-wiki side of it, (Wiktionary in this case). At each of the steps, the wikification, and transwiki log and edit summaries, etc. on Wiktionary, it just gave me an error message. But it worked fine on Wikipedia. Ideas? --Dmcdevit·t 01:51, August 2, 2005 (UTC)
I don't see a wikt:User:Dmcdevit/monobook.js, or anything in any of the other skins' js files. Was it deleted? Or was it under a different user name? And what was the error message it gave you? —Cryptic (talk) 19:56, 5 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I have a different username there, could that be it? Anyway, it's at wikt:User:McBot/monobook.js. When I click the edit summary tab I get

(the text of function transwiki_summary())

clicking wikify history gives me:

(the text of function transwiki_history())

And I have no "log entry" button at all. Nothing wrong at all with the Wikipedia end of it though. Maybe I messed it up somehow, but I can't figure it out. --Dmcdevit·t 20:16, August 5, 2005 (UTC)
The first problem is fixed by this diff. The second is because you use underscores instead of spaces in the value of transwiki_log_location. —Cryptic (talk) 20:43, 5 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations!

Couldn't have happened to a nicer, more dedicated person, I'm sure. If you ever get a few minutes take a look at some of the articles I've posted in the past week or so. Could probably use an impartial eye. Keep up the good work! Hamster Sandwich 10:51, 26 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The vfd vote on Islamic Term

2+2 is 4, 4+4 is 8. 8+8 is 16. You don't plan on doing vfds do ya? if you do, I'll lend you a shield. And get ready to quote "Wikipedia is not a majoritarian state" over and over and over again. And over. And over. And over. :-D --Woohookitty 02:59, 27 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The old Vfd votes

Well I'll help! :) If anything else, I can close the ones that need closing while I go. Since you are doing M, I'll start with Z and go backwards and we'll meet somewhere in the middle. How does that sound? --Woohookitty 06:14, 27 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Okey doke. Well I found 2 in Z that hadn't been listed on the vfd page. I actually had to remove one of the description pages and recreate it (and submit it) because it was so badly done. This shouldn't be this hard people! :) --Woohookitty 06:38, 27 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Dmc, could you do me a favor? Go to Wikipedia:BJAODN/Template:Vfdl and tell me what the hell that is about? :) --Woohookitty 21:27, 28 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well I found it on the pages on votes for deletion. And it is off of it now. Thanks. --Woohookitty 21:49, 28 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Could you please help with another user?

Hi. I have to reason to believe the user freestylefrappe has been adding irrelevant and mistranslated content into the article qiyamah After lengthy a few lengthy threads in the article's talk page, and my user's talk page, he seems to have stopped reverting my deletions, but he continues to flamebait me. I've made a brief report on the Wikipedia:Vandalism in progress but i've had no replies. I've decided to stop replying to the user even if he restores his earlier edits. He's charging me with insulting him and another user, and is quoting earlier edits of mine from our discussion threads which I had deleted and replaced with final more restrained versions of my replies. None of this is what i come to wikipedia for, and I'd like to resolve this continuing interaction, so I can get on with the actual editing and augmentation of my articles' content. Thank you and regards --Universaliss 04:10, 29 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much

Dmcdevit , thank you very much for your input. Yes it is very helpful, and I will follow your recommendations. Thanks again for the expedient reply and help. Best. --Universaliss 05:16, 29 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting comment on Universaliss's talk page...I'm glad you maintained...neutrality....but I'm surprised you didn't see his comments towards Zora as personal attacks. Did you see my earlier comment on Universaliss's talk page...? Or did you check the history on the Qiyamah talk page? Universaliss-"Sounds to me like you Zora are one of those zionist-motivated police state enforcers"
You really dont seem to understand the situation. All of the user's edits on the content page other than changing that one phrase to "engulfed in darkness" have been removing content altogether. As appealing as making daily reports to you would be, I think I'll refrain. What I am going to do is try to take a route I believe will lead to acceptance on both sides; directly quoting the Quran and noting multiple ways to interpret the ayat. If Universaliss makes one more comment like the above excerpt I will ask another administrator for a 24 hour ban, and protection of the page, as you seem hesitant. The verse in question can be found here. freestylefrappe 21:49, July 29, 2005 (UTC)
As for the Zionist-motivated police state enforcer -- I didn't complain -- I don't usually complain about personal attacks -- but I quite enjoyed the name-calling. It's cheered me up for days. It's not often that a Zen Buddhist gets called an "Islamo-fascist bitch" (by someone else) and a "Zionist enforcer" on the very same day! Zora 08:35, 2 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Done. I agree with your assessment of the situation - none of the keep votes came from established Wikipedia users. CDC (talk) 23:22, 29 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. I just finished an article on Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez and wanted to move it to the more proper title of Josefa Ortíz de Domínguez. However this article already exists, and is listed as a copyvio. I don't really know how to go about moving my article to the new location, merging histories and such, so your help would be appreciated. Thanks! -- Rune Welsh ταλκ 13:14, July 30, 2005 (UTC)

Admin

I saw you a while ago through VfD, and noticed you made some rather smart choices in what to nominate and vote for. I checked your page again (not realizing I had already seen it), and saw you were made an admin on my birthday. So firstly, congratulations, and secondly, thanks for making good descisions. -mysekurity 06:40, 31 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Happy birthday! And thanks for your kind words. They mean a lot to me, especially because I've had a depressing day. With the drudgery of VfD closings, puctuated by chasing around a vandal who was uploading an image of "ass puss" to pages, then having a run-in with sockpuppets on vfd, then being personally attacked in another dispute I was simply trying to mediate, your comments made me smile. Anyway, thanks! And back to VfD for a little bit longer (which is, now that I think about it, a kind of ironic place to meet someone, I mean, Votes for deletion...) --Dmcdevit·t 07:03, July 31, 2005 (UTC)
I'm glad to assist. Well, I'm guessing VfD meetings were BOUND to happen, and I'm sorry you've had such a crappy day. I don't know what time it is where you are, but it's 3 in the morning on the East Coast. *edit* I see you're in San Fran, but still. I need some shut-eye. I find VfD pages can be relaxing as well as stressful, and almost always help me learn new things, which is why I love 'em. Plus, I get to talk with people such as yourself! Any VfD page you think I might be interested in, just drop me a line at my talk page. Thanks again, and keep up the good work, mysekurity. (07:08, 31 July 2005 (UTC))[reply]

Blocking me

I dont understand you're motivation for blocking me. You say I made personal attacks and the link I followed was the Qiyamah talk page..I presume you mean my comment that Universaliss was vandalizing it. Im not sure if you were confused or simply refrained from viewing his last two edits. His last two edits were what motivated me to my accusation. He replaced the page with utter nonsense. After you blocked me you didnt even rv his vandalism! I assume your decision to block me was an accident...but it does seem suspect...especially considering your recent and persistent need to engage me in convos which really dont concern you (Woohookity and that vfd consensus). I read your comment at southerncomfort's talkpage and I think you should know that I have not mislead her as i have never talked to this user. You said you blocked universaliss for a week...do you mean you blocked him/her yesterday and this will last for a week? No matter. I simply want that user to stop 1. reverting to old-outdated versions of the page which contain grammatical and technical inaccuracies, 2. stop the personal attacks, and religious attacks (towards Protestants, Jews, and Ahmadis), 3.and stop deleting information that he/she disagrees with. I really dont think this is asking that much. In terms of diffusing the situation...I tried to add in a passage that all parties could agree to. His response was too massively delete info in various sections and add in comments like "you fucking troll". freestylefrappe 03:26, August 1, 2005 (UTC)

Now I understand. I think the recent spur of anon vandalism is actually two users as one user seems to have an IP with a number around 62-70 whereas another user seems to be around 212. Maybe a vandal-collaboration? I think (temporarily) it would be a good idea to protect the page. Any objections? freestylefrappe 19:03, August 1, 2005 (UTC)
Hmm...the only other registered user I can think of is Cool girl with info (who I previously assumed was one of Universaliss's sockpuppets). Thanks for monitoring the page. freestylefrappe 19:58, August 1, 2005 (UTC)

If you're going to block for personal attacks ...

Please take a look at the anon who's posting in Talk:Sayyid and Grand Ayatollah al-Shirazi. I can't believe that he's calling people "cocksuckers" with impunity. Zora 03:50, 1 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks very much for the block. Sleep well. Zora 08:36, 2 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Can I get a copy of Irish-American Mayors before it was deleted? I had made many additions to it and was not expecting it to be deleted as there was no recent disscussion and the last person to vote said keep it and gave a link with why the page should be kept, while many of the delete votes were because they did not like me, the creator. I am not asking for the page to be back up, but is there a way it could be back up just for a moment so I can make a copy of it? I would very much appericiate it. Thank you. 64.108.212.56 19:46, 1 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Note: I hadn't realized that you may have a dynamic IP, so, while I replied on your talk page, I'll copy my response below n case you're watching here. Sounds like you want a temporary undeletion for the purpose of copying your own work and using it elsewhere. You should take it to Wikipedia:Votes for undeletion, and and reqest this, explaining your case. See Wikipedia:Undeletion policy as well. Since the deletion wasn't out-of-process, you just want a copy of it, I don't think I could undelete it temporarily without VfU. Good luck there. --Dmcdevit·t 20:38, August 1, 2005 (UTC)

FSF

Firstly, I don't appreciate you accusing me of making a personal attack when I have not done so - disagreeing with the actions of another editor or admin does not constitute a personal attack, and admins do often make mistakes. Please do not take criticism as an "attack" - see Wikipedia:No personal attacks for clarification on this. It may not be a hard and strict policy, but it should be interpreted properly and within context. My only concern here is that editors like FSF, who have contributed immensely to Islam-related articles, not be blocked when they are defending an article against vandalism, and unfortunately, as I'm sure you are very aware, Islam-related articles are prone to the worst sort of vandalism, and we need good editors who are knowledgeable in this subject to keep an eye on such articles since the average editor may not be able to discover "sneaky vandalism" when it appears (and this happens often as well). This was certainly the case with the vandal in question. Like I said, my primary concern here is that actions not be taken which will end up alienating good and vital contributors, especially those who have worked hard to protect articles against vandalism. I would urge you in the future, when dealing with established contributors in such a context (i.e., in the midst of vandalism) to not block so quickly but instead protect the article, so as to dissuade vandalism. This is purely my opinion, of course, but other editors and myself have simply become very frustrated with the level of vandalism in articles of this subject matter. I appreciate that you are willing to communicate and I hope you understand where I am coming from on this. Take care, SouthernComfort 06:54, 2 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

BTW, I agree with Zora above - the anon in question is 69.111.161.69, and he has been specifically attacking User:Zereshk on numerous occasions, using racially derogatory terms and so forth, and he has also made anti-Semitic remarks in his edit summaries on Afghanistan and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the past. SouthernComfort 07:00, 2 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

You'll have to forgive me for that, as I have a very high-resolution monitor and obviously misread your username! ;) Glad to hear everything has been finally settled amiably, and as well I seriously appreciate your blocking the anon who had previously eluded notice for too long it seems. I'll definitely help with the backlog, but I'm going to sleep now. Thanks for your help. I have one more problem, though. I tried setting up Cryptic's helper thing, and I also found the VfD one. My preferences are set to MonoBook, so I tried copying and pasting yours (which is what it is now), and I had the same problem. Do you know why this is? Otherwise I'll just play around tomorrow.
