Structures[edit]

I've written a page on the Arapuni Suspension Bridge and was considering adding this to the section 'Structures' of the template. Bridges and the like are listed in the templates for the other long rivers. I noticed, however, that this template has only structures that are located in the river, and not above. So before I charge ahead, I thought I'd ask whether anybody had any thoughts on this. Schwede66 (talk) 19:25, 16 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Awaroa River[edit]

The link is to the river in Northland. Does anyone know enough about the river near Waiuku to write an article to link to? There's also a river with the same name in Tasman.Johnragla (talk) 09:02, 5 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Mangatangi River[edit]

The template includes Mangatangi River, but the 1:50,000 map shows Mangatangi Stream. The Geographic Board says it's not an official name. The stream/river is about 35km long, which is a fair length for a river. The dictionary doesn't help either; a river is a large stream! LAWA calls it a River, as does Regional Council in documents on swimming and flow, but not in the catchment management plan. Other references to River are on Te Awa, RNZ, District Council, National Library, the local historical group and a Ratification Information Booklet.

There are also Mangatangi Streams near Waverley, near Shannon and flowing into Lake Taharoa, but no Mangatangi River on the map.

The guidance on alternative names doesn't seem to cover this. Are there precedents elsewhere on Wikipedia where the sources seem divided on the name of a waterway? Johnragla (talk) 16:39, 24 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

It's not covered by the guidelines because it's a different case. What we have is a waterway with an uncertain name, not a dual name. What you do is:

Write an article.
State in the lead that different sources suggest different names.
Have the article name with "River".
Set up a redirect for the alternative name.

I tend to follow the Gazetteer, which uses 'Mangatangi Stream'. It takes the name from the NZMS map, also a source I give a lot of weight to. It is interesting that a number of sources use 'Mangatangi River', which gives me pause. The road signs where SH2 crosses it say 'Mangatangi Stream Bridge'. I incline to 'Mangatangi Stream', but there is also a case for 'Mangatangi River'. Nurg (talk) 09:58, 19 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
