Would it be useful to be more specific with the list of 'other major theatres' and 'fringe?' Because some of the venues in both lists would be better classed as Off-West End, e.g. Almeida, Young Vic, Arcola. 92.69.143.162 (talk) 09:53, 25 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sectioning[edit]

I think separate categories would be appropriate for the suburban theatres (which act primarily as local touring houses and community theatres), for the Fringe theatres, and for the Amateur theatres - those are three completely distinct and unrelated groups which, for some reason, have all been lumped together. I'm also not so sure about the term "Off West End" - is the an official definition for it? MKngbry (talk) 10:20, 25 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I think there's a definite difference between what are increasingly being called "Off West End" theatres and the really small fringe theatres. Historically these were all lumped together as fringe, but there's been a rethinking on that; there's a reason New York theatre has the separate categories for Off Broadway and Off off Broadway, and London has adopted a similar categorization, albeit not as strictly defined. So I think we should keep Off West End and fringe separate.

I agree touring houses are something else different again, and should also be separate and labelled as such.

Amateur theatre is a sticky wicket. On one hand, there's some really great quality productions equal to at the least professional fringe shows, and the line between non-profit professional and amateur is fuzzy (as amateur groups do hire some production staff depending on the production, like non-profits). On the other hand they are put on by groups who do theatre as a hobby. Putting them in a separate section is the least we need to do, but even more so we have to consider trimming them. oknazevad (talk) 15:25, 25 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
