When clicking on the sister project image[edit]

{{editprotected}}

Please make it so when clicking on the sister project image, you are directed to the corresponding link, not the sister's mainpage. I'm not sure but I think something like this could be added link=commons:Special:Search/{{PAGENAME}}|Commons. Thanks -- penubag  (talk) 09:07, 8 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

 Not done - Perhaps try experimenting with the coding in a sandbox in a subpage of your userspace and resubmit when you know more specifically what is needed to change? Cirt (talk) 14:33, 8 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Alt text[edit]

“Sister project” is not appropriate alt text for the image.

If the template will always have a text link to the same page and the logo link duplicates it, then empty alt="" is appropriate. The logo is only a visual cue duplicating the text link, so there is no point in having redundant text.

If the template is not guaranteed to have the text link, then when we change the logo for sighted readers, we should also change the alt text for those relying on text-only browsers or assistive technology: “Wikimedia Commons”, “Wikimedia Community”, “Wikibooks”, etc. Michael Z. 2008-12-15 00:47 z

{{editprotected}}

I just now ran into the problem myself, and agree with Michael Z.'s analysis. I implemented the requested change in the sandbox with this edit, and tested the change with the test cases. Can you please install the change into the template? Thanks. Eubulides (talk) 09:48, 9 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sister projects - link order problem[edit]

Problem when embedded in a bullet list[edit]

{{editprotected}}

(posting here at the suggestion of msgj (talk · contribs) after first mentioning it at Template talk:Wikinews)

A dependent template ({{wikinews}}) was used in this version of the Willamette Week article between two items in a bullet list, and (this is key) without a line break between the template and the end of the first bullet item. That use produced an unintended result, i.e. the box around the item was missing and the text within the box was not floated along the right side. After some experimentation it was easy to work around this problem, but it would be better if either the {{sister}} template were fixed to not exhibit this layout behavior (sorry, I can't be more specific) or if this limitation could be documented at Template:Sister/doc. This issue may be years old, since it's very similar to one mentioned here in 2006 on the talk page for Wikinews, where the following example was cited:

The following text

* {{wikinews|Look at me! Out of my box!}}

produces this output:

* {{wikinews|Look at me! Out of my box!}}

Thanks in advance. 68.167.253.238 (talk) 00:19, 3 March 2009 (UTC).[reply]

That is a known bug in the MediaWiki software. Most message boxes have the same problem, since anything built with a table has this problem. And we don't have a fix for it other than not putting the message boxes in dotted lists. Sorry.
Oh, and you should not use the {{editprotected}} like you did. It is only for calling in an admin to edit a page when you do have the exact code to add.
--David Göthberg (talk) 03:44, 3 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Could this be documented? Truth be told, I actually think this is quite a neat side-effect... Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 10:00, 3 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It looks slightly better if you use a colon.

: {{wikinews|Look at me! Out of my box!}} : {{wikinews|Look at me! Out of my box!}}

Wikipedia[edit]

"wikipedia" should be an allowed value for |project=. See for example {{InterWiki}}. —Ms2ger (talk) 11:27, 3 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

 Done I agree. Happymelon 12:47, 3 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The way you added it correctly caused a Wikipedia logo, but caused a search link to the English Wikipedia. But templates like {{InterWiki}} are meant to link to other language editions. So while I was adding some other fixes, I also added the "lang" parameter. Now we can feed this:
{{sister
| project = wikipedia
| lang = de
| text = German Wikipedia has more media on "something".
}}
Which renders the box you see to the right. Its image link goes to a search on the German Wikipedia.
Of course, I am not so sure those boxes should have a search for the current page name. I find the whole thing with the image having a search link pretty strange. I think those logos should probably not be linked at all.
--David Göthberg (talk) 07:06, 27 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with David for a number of reasons, and have removed said link. Rich Farmbrough, 17:12, 16 July 2010 (UTC).[reply]

Addition of Wikivoyage and Wikidata[edit]

Please add the WMF's two newest projects, Wikivoyage and Wikidata. I have corrected the template on Template:Sister/sandbox and tested all 5 instances on Template:Sister/testcases. The following 2 lines must be added: | wikidata|data = Wikidata-logo.svg | wikivoyage|voyage|voy = Wikivoyage favicon.svg

Although not transcluded on any templates at the current time, there are plans to use them soon (ie, for Template:Wikivoyage). Thanks in advance. JamesA |>talk 12:05, 13 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the ping, I'm acting on this now. The thing is, before Special:Diff/728024518, I believe all the icons had link suppressed for attribution. Disable Media Viewer[edit]

Unlinking images with empty alt attributes[edit]

A linked image with an empty alt attribute is an accessibility error, equivalent to an empty link for screen readers, and other nonvisual things like search engine indexers. The empty alt attribute is appropriate, because adjacent text is sufficient as alternative text — {{Wikinews}}, for example, has the Wikinews logo followed by the word "Wikinews". It seems unlikely that users following the image link want or expect to go to the image description page. So, although there are a few different ways to resolve the accessibility error, I propose simply unlinking the images, as in the sandbox. Edit request (add "c" for Commons)[edit]

Problem: Hello, I wonder why for the most projects there are shorthands but not for Commons:

Proposal: I propose to add c as alias / shorthand for Commons. Line 9:

    | commons|c               = Commons-logo.svg

That will also match with Template:Sister project links#Images used.

And if you want to continue, there they have additional:

  • wikt for Wiktionary
  • d for Wiktionary

What I think is a good idea too. Strangely there they have also:

  • iw for Wikipedia

what we maybe better change there than here. Thanks and Regards, --W like wiki good to know 22:43, 7 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I guess it makes sense to bring the two templates into line. Would you please make required changes to Template:Sister project/sandbox? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 15:47, 9 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
 Partly edited – included c for commons and wikt for wiktionary. d for Wiktionary is already in this template and has been since it was created in 2008. That's a bit confusing since Wikidata uses "d" as a prefix, see d:Q34969. Not sure what to do about that since Wikidata wasn't added to this template until 2012. The iw denotes an interwiki link to an other-language Wikipedia. P.I. Ellsworth , ed. put'er there 13:14, 11 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
