Tidy up[edit]

I have tried to clean up the structure of the template in order to reflect the content more clearly. Please let me know any comments. nirvana2013 14:37, 16 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Featured links and navigation[edit]

I have placed this template on all articles featured on it (excluding Barack Obama; I tried but there was a problem and I was not able to place this template on that page).
I am not sure if all articles listed here belong to this template. For example:

Ahimsa, Ashram, Bhagavad Gita, Henry David Thoreau, Civil disobedience, Fasting, Hinduism, Islam (removed), Jainism, John Ruskin, Leo Tolstoy, The Kingdom of God Is Within You, The Masque of Anarchy, Muhammad (removed), Pacifism, Sermon on the Mount (removed), Shrimad Rajchandra, Unto This Last, Vegetarianism in the Influences group;

Martin Luther King, Jr., James Lawson, Nelson Mandela, Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan (removed already included in the Associates group), Steve Biko, Aung San Suu Kyi, Benigno Aquino, Jr. (removed), Tenzin Gyatso (removed), Maria Lacerda de Moura, Albert Einstein (removed), Lanza del Vasto, John Lennon (removed), Al Gore (removed), Barack Obama (removed) in the Influenced group;

Kanyakumari, Union Square (removed), New York (removed), Martin Luther King, Jr., National Historic Site, Atlanta (removed), Pietermaritzburg, Moscow (removed), San Francisco (removed), Honolulu (removed) in the Memorials at group.

...but if you think that an article listed here does NOT belong to this navigation template and decide to remove it from the article then please REMOVE the link from the template or we will have a dead-end link. Thanks. –pjoef (talkcontribs) 13:10, 12 July 2011 (UTC) [last updated: 18:30, 13 July 2011 (UTC)][reply]

Just to clarify, since you're maintaining such a good record, although included in the same edit (and edit summary) as several others, Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan was not removed from the Influenced group because his inclusion was not supported by his article, but because he was also included in the Associates group, which seems a better fit. Thank you, Fat&Happy!!! I found a couple of duplicate links on yesterday, but I have not noticed that one. –pjoef (talkcontribs) 18:32, 13 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Randy Kryn How about we merge "influences" to "Philosophy" since these items helped in the development of his philosophy? We can remove "influenced" because this parameter will look incomplete unless we include over 200 names. Another reason is that nearly all listed on "Associates" are actually Gandhians. It will look repetitive. Aman Kumar Goel (Talk) 04:52, 16 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Not going into a long discussion now. "Philosophy" would mean Gandhi's philosophy, not things which influenced him, which is a good section. No need to repeat Associates with Influenced, no overlap needed. Randy Kryn (talk) 04:55, 16 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Then "Influences" should be limited to particular people or philosophies, not songs or letters. The "Influenced" parameter only includes real humans, otherwise songs like Man in the Mirror can make its way there. Aman Kumar Goel (Talk) 05:04, 16 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Aman.kumar.goel, looks good. Perhaps you can alphabetize the influenced list (the newly added names could be alphabetized within the existing names)? Thanks for the ping. Randy Kryn (talk) 15:10, 16 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Fixed it. Aman Kumar Goel (Talk) 15:18, 16 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Inclusiveness[edit]

A discussion may be appropriate as to how inclusive this template should be, especially as to Memorials and Legacy. I added one article to each of these sections, but then realized the template could easily expand beyond a useful and manageable size. Just entering "Mahatma Gandhi" into the Wikipedia search box returns pages, with at least the first 50 entries being actual articles with "Mahatma Gandhi" in the name. Comments? Fat&Happy (talk) 21:23, 13 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A Wikipedia search for Mahatma+Gandhi+the produces about 2500 results. I think it is too much for a NAV template (lol). 2500 wlinks within a single navbox does NOT help a reader in reading and navigating topics related to Gandhi, and, also, it will not be transcluded properly. The scope of a navbox is to facilitate the navigation between articles "strictly" related to him or to one or more sub-topics (e.g.: "life", "family", and "legacy" OR "influences" and "influenced"...). It is possible to split it into multiple navigation templates, one for each sub-topic (or group of sub-topics), or to collapse all groups in the existing one by using {{Navigation with collapsible groups}}. I think it is appropriate to examine and evaluate all cases=(articles related to Gandhi) one by one. This way we can get an idea about that, and then decide what is the best thing to do. I think that we can use this space to provide and examine proposals about this. At the moment we are doing the opposite thing: to remove wikilinks that do NOT belong 100% to the subject (Gandhi). –pjoef (talkcontribs) 08:31, 14 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, that's sort of what I was getting at. Under that understanding, I would remove Kanyakumari (which I added) and Pietermaritzburg (which was already there, but I section-linked) from the Memorials section. I'm slightly ambivalent about Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Legacy, but on net it should probably go too. Fat&Happy (talk) 15:36, 14 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
