Discipline

Is it worth tweaking the "discipline" parameter to accept a shorthand of MAG/WAG/RG/TRA/AER/ACRO (the abbreviations used by FIG? If it could be done to pass through any unrecognised value "as-is" (for backward computability or the option for multiple values, not that I can think of any cross discipline gymnasts off the top of my head) -- this way we could ensure consistency between gymnasts? I've prototyped the proposed change to demonstrate what I mean at {{Infobox Gymnast/sandbox}}, and there are two samples at Template:Infobox Gymnast/testcases, one that passes through (to test backward compatibility) and the second to show the simpler version in use -- ratarsed (talk) 12:04, 21 August 2008 (UTC)

Flag in infobox?

This template's documentation says to use {{IOC Country Code}} for the 'country' parameter, which seems to explicitly conflict with MOS:FLAG which says, in part, As with other biographical articles, flags are discouraged in sportspeople's individual infoboxes even when there is a "country", "nationality", "sport nationality" or equivalent field: they may give undue prominence to one field over others. I spot-checked a few articles and they all seem to include flags. Is this intentional, or is it perhaps a relic of an earlier time before consensus was reached for the MOS? New subheading

I've added a subheading saying "— Gymnast —" , with an indicator for the subject's gender (use |gender=m or |gender=f).

Would it be useful to add a parameter to make that sub-heading configurable, in case a different word or short phrase is needed? Are there any examples of such usage?

I had wanted to make the gender icon to appear top-right or bottom-right in the infobox, but that's harder to style. It's intended to be as discrete as possible, while still accessible. Any thoughts or suggestions? Should we style the abbreviation so that there is no underlining?

The Gender parameter has now been in this template for nigh on a year, with no objections (see Terin Humphrey for an example). As stated above, I had planned to request a bot to populate it. However, in the interim, a great deal of good work has been done to populate the gender parameter of the equivalent Wikidata entities. (For those of you interested, the Wikidata game is a great way to contribute to that.) I therefore propose to add code that will populate the parameter "on-the-fly" from Wikidata. I've created a trial version as Template:Infobox gymnast/Wikidata. You can examine the effect on an article such as Lilia Podkopayeva (more articles to test at What links here) by previewing the article with "{{Infobox gymnast" changed to "{{Infobox gymnast/Wikidata". Please don't save it - we're just discussing at present. The wikidata call can be suppressed by a blank |gender= parameter supplied locally to the infobox if the gender is unclear. I like that a little icon appears but I don't think gender is necessary - most of these are covered by the discipline field: women's artistic, men's artistic or rhythmic. Acro and trampoline/tumbling are not obvious but gender is not really not so significant. Even in a stub there should be enough of a sentence to cover if the athlete is male or female. I would much prefer to see little icons for each discipline - that would look great. Wikimandia (talk) 02:57, 15 January 2015 (UTC)

Hi Andy Mabbett, I created tons of gymnasts articles last days. As championships articles are like "2015 World... .. - Men's qualification" and "2015 World Championships... .. - Women's qualification"; I used 'm' for male (which is OK), but 'w' for women. It will take a lot of time to change them all, but because I think it's also logic to use 'w' it might be a good option to add the 'w' for 'female' (|gender=w). Can you implement that? Flags

Using IOC country coude as stated in the country parameter would violate WP:INFOBOXFLAG. Other templates avoid using flags, like Template:Infobox sportsperson. --Osplace 23:23, 20 September 2017 (UTC)

'check for unknown parameters' recording category

The current category used for 'check for unknown parameters' to record pages with unknown parameters is 'Category:Pages using Template:Infobox gymnast with unknown parameters'. Most other templates would use a 'Category:Pages using infobox gymnast with unknown parameters' I would suggest changing to using the de facto standard used by the vast majority of infoboxes. World Cup medals

In recent years, users who are not actively part of Project Gymnastics have added medals earned at World Cup stages to the medal record in many articles, what usually pollutes the article and expands the size of the template considerably. I have tried my best to let users know that these medals should be listed on the article, but not on the infobox, but again and again new users edit the infobox adding medals earned at the World/Challenge Cup stages.

I have a simple suggestion: why not add a medal count parameter for World Cup and World Challenge Cup stages? This way, the total number of medals achieved on these stages could be informed, instead of listing each and every one on the infobox per se. My suggestion is that it could look (very) roughly like this:

Medal record Women's artistic gymnastics FIG World Cup Event 1st 2nd 3rd Total medals 30 20 10

Of course the layout will need many improvements, since I am not able to create something that remotely looks good, but the general idea is: can we find an easy and practical way to list the number of medals earned at World Cup stages on this infobox? - ThiagoSimoes (talk) 17:31, 22 August 2018 (UTC)

Template-protected edit request on 4 September 2022: native_name

Add support for the native_name and native_name_language parameters, as is done in {{infobox person}} and many others. Specific addition (copied from infobox person) would be
