References[edit]

I am running into a few issues and someone please show me any error I am making.

  • At least part of the above suggested content, that is used in the article from the listed Mideast World Cruise 1972-1973 Book, the Mideast-World Cruise: USS Charles R. Ware -DD 865 (1972-1973), is clearly not in the public domain as the top of each page is marked "Copyrighted Material". Close paraphrasing, and certainly copy/pasting such content, that likely violates WP:Copyvio (hanging around since November 29, 2012‎), should not be done. I have raised the issue of allowing this practice, without proper attribution and referencing, and now I see why I don't like it. There is probably a reason consensus decided "In 99.9% of cases, you may not copy and paste text from other sources into Wikipedia" and this may not be one of the 01% exceptions.
  • The article is marked as "This article incorporates text from the public domain Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships.", but with no direct attribution. The DANSF DD-865 page ends at the year 1960. There is the Tin Can Sailors website; Dispositions of US Navy Destroyers, that has an apparent erroneous date (Sunk as target on 11/13/1981), and a separate Navsource link that gives some information but is not linked to. There is a USS Charles R. Ware DD-865 website that has information and I suppose could be used as an "External link".
  • Even if material is copy/pasted from public domain (yuck) there needs to be a direct link to this information. This is very true when other references are used that will show what is what and which is which so other editors don't have to do so much extra work. Guess it just needs deleting? Otr500 (talk) 16:58, 22 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Copyvio[edit]

This article was tagged in 2015 for likely copyvio issues. These have not been addressed even though edits have been made (Pinging User:Nigel Ish) If there is no interest I will try to remove (reword etc...) the issues. If I can not get free to do this shortly I will simply blank the material that shows to be a very likely copyvio of a least one source until such time as this can be addressed. There was direct copy/paste issues as I recall. Otr500 (talk) 04:42, 5 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

DANFS is a public domain source - Hazegray is just another copy of the originally printed DANFS, which is also available on the Naval History and Heritage Command's website (and it was updating a link to the "official" DANFS website in a citation which was my only previous edit to the article, as part of a series of updates to DANFS links for US destroyers), so the stuff copied from it does not need to be removed as a copyvio (although it could always do with some TLC and rewording). I've removed the text copied from the cruise book as that doesn't appear to be PD.Nigel Ish (talk) 09:46, 5 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
