Travel times and social impact[edit]

It would be interesting to have information on typical travel times between, say:

  • Bejing and Delhi
  • Delhi and London
  • London and New York
  • New York and San Francisco
  • Cairo and Capetown

in the eras of travel by foot, animal, cart, ship, railroad, automobile, and jet. It would also be interesting to put in context these changes - for example, the effect on globalization, politicis, social contacts, etc. -- Beland (talk) 03:06, 27 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Images are rather anglocentric[edit]

Can we have a selection of images of transportation that are less biased in favor of the British Isles? 160.93.18.2 (talk) 16:50, 31 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

By the way, Brexit has nothing to do with this request. 160.93.18.2 (talk) 16:51, 31 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Proposal for changes to section headings[edit]

This article needs to be divided by era, and then by different types of technology. the current division by type of transportation alone, i.e. land, water and air, is too broad, and is not helpful to the reader. the central event in the history of transportation is the rise of mechanized and motorized forms of transportation, i.e. steam power, and the combustion engine. this should be the major dividing line in the article; ie. between the eras of animal-powered or wind-powered transport, and all the forms of human-invented transportation methods since the Industrial Revolution.

therefore I propose the following reworking of article sections, as noted below. Please feel free to comment. this is simply a working general overview for section headings; the results might vary slightly as we revise the article.

  • Overview
  • Origins of transportation
    • Water transport
    • Land transport
  • Ancient era
    • Ancient water transport
      • Maritime technology and trade

Is there any contradiction here?[edit]

@Hanif Al Husaini: I don't understand this cleanup tag. Does the History of transport article still contradict this article in some way? Jarble (talk) 14:44, 5 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Jarble: I think I placed that from an old tag that was placed on this talk page. It was originally placed on this diff.I don't know if it is still valid or not. Hanif Al Husaini (talk) 16:07, 5 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I appreciate that helpful comment here. ---Sm8900 🌎 03:37, 6 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
