The Capture of Kanchangarh was a military expedition led by Tipu Sultan against the Marathas who had captured the town.[2] This took place in 1786. The Maratha armies were led by Hari Pant Phirkia. This expedition was aimed at expelling the Marathas from the territory of the Mysore Sultanate.

Background[edit]

In 1786, Tipu Sultan was focused on expanding his kingdom and began capturing nearby territories. During this time, he successfully defeated the Maratha alliance in the Siege of Adoni, ultimately capturing the city. Tipu Sultan also emerged victorious over the Nizam and Marathas in this battle. Following this triumph, he advanced towards Gopal and ultimately reached Kanchan Garh, which was held by the Marathas.

The Battle[edit]

The battle occurred at the fort of Kanchangarh, with Tipu Sultan leading the forces of Mysore and Hari Pant commanding the Maratha forces.[2] Following a brief siege, Tipu Sultan emerged victorious,[2] defeating the Marathas.[3] Subsequently, upon learning of the invasion by Tipu Sultan, the Rani fled with her female servants.[3]

Aftermath[edit]

The Marathas retreated from the fort of Kanchangarh.[4] The Rani, who had fled earlier, was captured and forcibly converted to Islam. Her son, Mudkum Kur, was imprisoned by Tipu Sultan for a period of 10 to 12 years.
