Rain, Steam and Speed - The Great Western Railway; the painting depicts an early locomotive of the Great Western Railway crossing the River Thames on Brunel's recently completed Maidenhead Railway Bridge.The painting is also credited for allowing a glimpse of the Romantic strife within Turner and his contemporaries over the issue of the technological advancement during the Industrial Revolution.

It's a nice picture, although it was featured on the portal in 2006. That is quite a long time ago now, though. It got me thinking about other paintings of railways; there are categories of railway paintings at commons:Category:Paintings of railways and locomotives and also commons:Category:Rail transport in art which have some quite nice alternatives such as the Monet painting The Railway Bridge at Argenteuil or possibly The Railroad Guard by L. A. Ring. In fact, the latter is rather nice and by a painter who is not particularly well known outside of Denmark. There are quite a lot of other railway-themed works by painters such as Van Gogh nestling in there too. Bob talk 18:41, 18 October 2012 (UTC)
