Proposal #1: Mark the root

Mark the root of chord by coloring the string with a solid red line. Mark the secondary root of chord by coloring the string with a dotted red line.

For ex. A-Major has an A on the G-String (in 2nd) and one on the A-String.
The A on the A-String is a secondary root.

Proposal #2: Add chord tone function layer

Instead of just plain dots change the dot shape as the following: ■ (Square) for root (0) ◆ (Black Diamond) for quints ▲ (Triangle) for third (Maybe a ▲ for major third and ▼ for minor)

  • (Star) for 7th.

Proposal #3: Add chord tone function layer

Keep the dots but add the tone functions by adding the shapes of the Proposal #2 at the start of the fretboard.
