Well, all this concept of the single drawing depicting who was where during long years of war is IMHO wrong. It should rather be either whole sequence of maps or something like [this]. Single picture is particularly misleading regarding to the large participants, like the US and the Soviet Union - both opposing Hitler only after beeing attacked, c.a. 2 years since the beginning of WW2. And the USSR before June 1941 was an active ally to Germany (aggressor to the Allies, both militarily (Invasion_of_Poland_(1939)#Phase_2:_Soviet_invasion_17.09.1939, Occupation_of_Baltic_Republics), and economically (German-Soviet_Commercial_Agreement). --EAJoe (talk) 15:37, 26 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It makes no sense to list China as an Axis country. The Sino-Japanese war started even before what most Westerners consider the beginning of World War 2. If it is blue because it was occupied, then only those areas actually occupied (which was never the entire country) should be blue, but if occupation is the guide then much of north Europe, including France, should be blue. While it is true that China did not declare war against Japan until after Japan attacked the USA, neither did Japan declare war on China — ever — so that is immaterial. Norway can plausibly be characterized as a part of the Allies but not Denmark, which never declared war on Germany and surrendered the day they were invaded to become a German puppet state. Classifying Iceland as part of the Allies is also strange to me; the country was neutral until it was invaded and occupied by Britain, becoming a British puppet state. Iceland was in a personal union with Denmark with Denmark being resposible for its foreign relations and defence. But in no case can it considered an allied country, but an neutral country under occupation. 82.181.150.151 22:51, 6 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Turkey declared war in 1945 to secure membership in the United Nations. Still rather misleading incluing such countries here, same goes for Chile and others. In general the map gives the wrong idea about actual combatants in the war and overstates the Allied side (as pointed out in surrounding comments). A redesign is no doubt in order. Turkey joined the war on the allied side on 23 February 1945. However overall turkey probably helped the axis far more than it helped the allies. Turkey continually supplied the axis chromite ore until 23 Aughust 1944. Chromite ore wich was neccessary for steel production was essential in germany's military power. Finland[edit]

Finland is marked with "Light green dots represent countries that later in the war changed from the Axis to the Allies". Although one could argue about Finland being Germany's ally or even an "Axis-country" (complicated question, see relevant articles), it certainly never was one of the Allies even when fighting the Germans. Inclusion of Axis-conquered countries as Axis states[edit]

The inclusion of countries like Ethiopia/Abyssinia I think is incorrect. Unlike many governments, they never came to terms with the occupying powers, they had internationally-recognised governments in exile and provided significant assistance to the Allies. Furthermore, Ethiopia was liberated in in 1940; see East African Campaign (World War II). For that matter Denmark and Thailand should probably be green with orange dots. Iceland[edit]

Iceland was never formally and Ally. It started the war a Danish colony, but when Denmark was invaded it declared independence and neutrality. Despite being neutral Iceland was invaded by Britain and subsequently occupied by Britain and the USA (see Iceland during World War II). Mongolia[edit]

Does this image only show when the countries "officially" declared war? Mongolia was the last country to declare war during WWII, but was engaged in actual combat way back in 1939 (see Battle of Khalkhin Gol) with the USSR and Japan, so shouldnt it be placed in the "Allies before the attack on Pearl Harbor" category? Yugoslavia, France, West Africa, and Finland[edit]

Yugoslavia was still one country when WWII started. Vichy France did not exist at the start of WWII. Finland should be shown with its pre-Winter War borders. And West Africa was never occupied by the Axis - it remained under French control right up until it was occupied by the Americans in 1942. Colored dots[edit]

British Somaliland, Egypt, Poland, China, the Soviet Union, Norway, Denmark, the Dutch East Indies, Burma, Malaya, Sarawak, Brunei, North Borneo, and the Philippines should all have blue dots, since they were invaded and occupied by the Axis. Manchukuo and Germany should have light green dots, since they both switched sides at the end of the war. Iceland should have a dark green dot, since it was invaded and occupied by the Allies. Libya, Eritrea, Italian Somaliland, and Slovakia should have light green dots for the same reason. The Soviet Union should be blue with a green dot since it was orIgi ally allied with Germany. Finland should be green with a blue dot because it was allied to Britain and France during the Winter War.
