This photo was a self portrait done by John in his studio in Chard, at the rear of his office studio along Fore Street, behind the current Butchers/Natwest bank building. He pioneered Colour Tin plate work, hence why most of Johns tin and glass plates still exist in the County Library Archive, and in color, compared to other Engineers at the time like Brunel, who's photos are often taken by local portrait photographers operating only in Black and White medium.
