Object history
Deutsch: Bürgstadt kam bereits sehr früh, vermutlich schon im 8. Jahrhundert, an das Erzstift Mainz und blieb dort als Sitz eines Zehntgerichts bis zum Ende des Alten Reichs 1803. Trotz dieser Bedeutung des Marktes sind keine älteren Siegel oder andere Nachweise eines Wappens bekannt. Erste Nachweise liefert die Bürgermeistermedaille von etwa 1820 mit dem bekannten Wappenbild. Das Rad und die Farben Silber und Rot weisen auf die Zugehörigkeit zum Kurstaat Mainz hin. Die Burg steht redend für den Ortsnamen, der Ortschaft an einer Burg bedeutet.
