Summary

Description
English: 'The Battle of Gettysburg', also known as the Gettysburg Cyclorama, is a cyclorama painting by the French artist Paul Philippoteaux depicting "Pickett's Charge", the climactic Confederate attack on the Union forces on Cemetery Ridge during the Battle of Gettysburg on Friday afternoon July 3, 1863.

The section of the Cyclorama shown above depicts Union General Winfield Scott Hancock crossing a farm road on a black horse heading in the direction of the Confederate breakthrough at "The Angle".

Hancock commanded the II Corps of the Army of the Potomac on July 3rd. His Corps bore the brunt of the Pickett-Pettigrew charge that day and ultimately repulsed it. He himself was severely wounded during this fight but recovered.

Hancock later received the thanks of the U.S. Congress for "... his gallant, meritorious and conspicuous share in that great and decisive victory."

Also, in the distant background of the Cyclorama segment shown above, white puffs of smoke show the position of Union artillery on Little Round Top. This artillery played a key role in blunting the Pickett-Pettigrew charge.
