Description
Cette peinture d'architecture est la synthèse de deux genres, la scénographie ou l'art des décors ingénieux et complexes, dont Servandoni, le maître de Demachy, était alors le spécialiste incontesté, et les ruines idéales, popularisées par Pannini, qui devaient avoir une influence si grande sur le développement du paysage dans la deuxième moitié du XVIIIe siècle avec, entre autres, Hubert Robert. Cette ruine imaginaire, vue depuis une perspective fuyante, devient ainsi l'unique sujet du morceau de réception et l'artiste est jugé sur sa virtuosité et sa faculté d'impressionner le spectateur. Demachy sera nommé plus tard professeur de perspective à l'Académie.
