Summary

Description
English: Believed to be the original from which copies were made for distribution throughout the kingdom. Photographed in subdued light.
"...we promise and swear, by the great name of the Lord our God, to continue in the profession and obedience of the foresaid religion; and that we shall defend the same, and resist all those contrary errors and corruptions, according to our vocation, and to the uttermost of that power that God hath put into our hands, all the days of our life."

The fifty-two words long Preamble to the Constitution of the United States (1787) echoes phrases in the National Covenant (given in brackets):

We the people of the United States [we noblemen, barons, gentlemen, burgesses, ministers and commons] in order to form a more perfect union [considering the great happiness which may flow from a full and perfect union] establish justice [judicatories be established and ministration of justice among us] insure domestic tranquillity [procure true and perfect peace] provide for the common defense [stand to the mutual defence] promote the general welfare [for the common happiness to conduce for so good ends and promote the same] and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity [security of said liberties to ourselves and our posterity] do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America [do ordain the Covenant and Constitution of this Kingdom]. -- from D. A Bruce, The Mark of the Scots, New York 1998
