Summary

Description
English: The Monmouth shroud The Shire Hall, erected in 1724 with market place below, and positioned in Agincourt Square, is still shrouded from view during renovation work. It was built to replace the Elizabethan Monmouth Court House and Market Hall. The building was designed to house two "Courts of Judicature" and a room for the Grand Jury at Assizes and Sessions. One of the most famous trials held there was that of the leaders of the Chartists, originally condemned to death but subsequently granted transportation to Van Diemen's Land. The Magistrates Court closed in December 1997 and the County Court closed in March 2002.
