| Description |
English: St John's Well St John's Well was the main reason for the development of High Harrogate as a spa. In 1632 Michael Stanhope produced a book called 'Cures without Care' in which he praises the waters of the spring that was discovered here. The nearby Tewit Well [SE3054] was already known, but the chalybeate [or iron] waters of St John's Well were considerably more palatable and thus made High Harrogate the centre of the early spa. It is also possible that Englands first 'convenience' was situated nearby as 'frequent draughts of this water, which is apt [with some violence] now and then to open the body' [Stanhope quote]. You have been warned! It used to be possible to obtain chalybeate water free of charge from the well, but the photographer is unsure if this is still possible. |
