Description
English: This is a double-sided leaf illustrating typical occupations for August/September and September /October. It is probably from a series of the Twelve Months. The side reproduced here features an exquisitely detailed scene showing peasants sowing and ploughing. It represents September or October. Miniatures were first painted to decorate and illustrate hand-written books. From the 1460s onwards there was competition from printed books. However wealthy patrons continued to provide a market for beautifully produced books or independent miniatures, including scenes like those painted by Simon Bening.
