English: Left brooch : silver brooch, in the form of a claymore basket sword and targe shield. the targe and hilt of the sword are inlaid with polished granite.This Scottish jewellery dates from around the mid-19th century 101mm long x 30mm wide HARGM : 2603

Right brooch : silver brooch, in the form of a claymore basket sword and targe shield The targe is inlaid with alternating sections of green and yellow jasper. The hilt is inlaid with red jasper under a pierced silver hand guard. This Scottish jewellery dates from around the mid-19th century. 75mm long x 39mm wide HARGM : 2604

These two pieces were made at period of time when there was renewed interest,especially amongst the British royal family,in the Scottish Highlands and highland dress.Queen Victoria purchased Balmoral Castle and its estate in 1848 and she insisted on wearing highland dress when she visited the estate.The royal family including her children appeared in court paintings wearing plaid affixed by brooches.The general public started following the royals' lead and it became fashionable to wear tartan,plaids and brooches which featured Scottish designs.
